Instructions
Observe a parent, teacher, or older sibling engaged in play with an infant/toddler. Guide the adult to engage in an activity or with a toy which is beyond the infant/toddler’s ability to do alone. Examples include: putting together a difficult puzzle, connecting pieces of a wooden train track so that they form a complete loop, making an art project, making chocolate milk, or putting on shoes or a coat.
Make notes about any examples of scaffolding that you observe by the older, more expert participant, and answer the following questions.
Does it seem to be effective? How do you know?
How does the child respond to this form of assistance?
Would the child’s abilities have been different if the child was older or younger?
Is there anything that you would do differently, if you were the older, more expert participant in that situation?
