Literature Review: Purpose, Objectives, and Hypotheses
Note: Before writing your purpose, objectives, and hypotheses, define your major variables.
For experimental studies, clearly identify which is the IV & DV.
Purpose:
The purpose statement should provide a specific and accurate synopsis of the overall purpose of the study. If the purpose is not clear to you , it cannot be clear to the reviewer.
Foreshadow the hypotheses to be tested or the questions to be answered, as well as the significance of the study. The purpose statement can also incorporate the rationale for the study.
Key points to keep in mind:
Try to incorporate a sentence that begins with “The purpose of this study is ….” This will clarify your own mind as to the purpose and it will inform the reader directly. This typically resembles the statement format of your research question!
Identify and define the central concepts or ideas of the study.
Purpose statement needs to be followed by 2 measurable objectives.
Objectives:
Your objectives are measurable activities that specify the end products of your project . It is extremely important to state your objectives in clear and measurable terms.
KEY QUESTIONS TO ANSWER
Answer these key questions as you write your proposal objectives:
Demonstrate that your objectives are important, significant, and timely?
Clearly describe your project’s purpose, objectives, and hypotheses?
Include objectives that comprehensively describe the intended outcomes of the project?
Include objectives that are well written, concise, clear, and measurable?
Detail your project’s hypotheses with conceptual clarity and sufficient details?
State objectives in terms of outcomes and not methods?
Include the population that will benefit in each objective?
State the time by which the objectives will be accomplished?
