6.1 [Assignments] Calculating Cardiovascular Fitness Indicators
For each of the following problems, show your work and use the proper units in your final answer.
1. Estimating Maximum Heart Rate: Calculate the maximum heart rate for a 38-year-old individual using the following equation: HRmax = 220 – age.
2. Calculating Cardiac Output: What is the cardiac output in ml/minute for an individual who has a heart rate of 71 beats per minute and 87 ml/beat?
Use this equation: Cardiac Output in ml/min = heart rate (beats/min) x stroke volume (ml/beat)
3. Estimating Target Heart Rate: Use the Karvonen formula below to determine the target heart rate for exercise for a 60-year-old man who is in fair physical condition, wants to exercise at a 60-percent intensity level and has a resting heart rate of 75 beats per minute.
THR = (HRmax – RHR) x TI% + RHR
THR = target heart rate
HRmax = maximum heart rate
RHR = resting heart rate
TI% = training intensity
4. Calculating BMI: Calculate the BMI for an individual who is 5 feet 10 inches tall and weighs 160 lbs. Is this within the range that is considered healthy?
[Weight in pounds/(height in inches)²] x 703 = BMI
