To me, a “gerontological nurse” is a healthcare professional who specializes in providing holistic care to elderly patients. They possess a deep understanding of the unique physical, emotional, and social needs of older adults and are trained to promote healthy aging, manage age-related diseases, and enhance the overall quality of life for their elderly patients.
The shortage of gerontological nurses is a pressing concern in the healthcare industry, especially considering the “gerontological explosion” of older adults mentioned by the National Institute on Health (NIH) (ACL, 2016). To address this issue, it’s essential to understand why so few students choose gerontological nursing as a specialty.
Firstly, the term “gerontological nurse” encompasses healthcare professionals who specialize in providing comprehensive care to older adults. In my view, a gerontological nurse is someone who possesses specialized knowledge and skills to meet the unique healthcare needs of the elderly, focusing on their well-being, quality of life, and promoting healthy aging.
