Read “An Alcoholic Case” and That Evening Sun.” Also review Jean Toomer and T.S. Eliot from last week. Then choose one of the options below. Answer the questions in that option in a post of at least 350 words. Start a new thread and give your post a subject.
Do NOT post attachments. You should compose your post in a word processor first and check the word count. Proofread your post for grammar, spelling, and punctuation. Organize your post into paragraphs by hitting Enter or Return at the end of each paragraph. Points will be deducted for careless, sloppy writing, as well as for not meeting the minimum word count. See rubric handout in the “Miscellaneous” submodule in the “Week 2” module.
IMPORTANT: You will not see your post on the board until I approve it. Do not panic if you do not see your post after you submit it. There is no need to submit again. 1) The alcoholic was once a cartoonist. What might this suggest about the story’s theme and the message about that theme? In what way does the fact that the alcoholic was once a cartoonist help the reader understand his character?
Support your answer by referring to details from the story. Don’t use quotes, however; simply refer briefly to key moments from the story that support your answer. Start your post with a thesis that answers these questions. Then explain your answer more fully in the rest of your post.
2) What social issue relevant to the South does “That Evening Sun” mainly explore? How do you know? And, ultimately, what message does the story present about that social issue? Support your answer by referring to details from the story. Don’t use quotes, however; simply refer briefly to key moments from the story that support your answer. Start your post with a thesis that answers these questions. Then explain your answer more fully in the rest of your post.
3) Why is it important that readers understand how Jefferson was fifteen years ago compared to now? Why does the narrator spend so much time in the beginning of the story highlighting the differences? Does the passage of time have any significance to the rest of the story? How so? Support your answer by referring to details from the story. Don’t use quotes, however;
