As discussed in my announcement video, these are going to be short, optional assignments that you may execute for extra credit. I am not going to restrict them, by much, but keep in mind the proverb, “you get what you give.” They will be listed at “0” points. This means if you do not complete them , it will not impact your final grade. This will only serve to help you, should you want or need the grade boost. You only need to post for credit, but the more you engage, the more you elaborate, the more I will honor your efforts with point value. The opportunity to earn this credit will close November 18th, with no exceptions. This is when I will close the threads and evaluate the points earned, per student. Anything you contribute from now until November 18th will count towards your total score.
President Biden in June signed into law the first major gun safety legislation passed in decades Links to an external site.. The measure failed to ban any weapons, but it includes funding for school safety and state crisis intervention programs. Many states — including California, Delaware and New York — have also passed new laws to help curb gun violence, such as regulating untraceable ghost guns and strengthening background check systems. Not everyone agrees that increased gun control is the answer. Some Americans advocate for their right to keep and bear arms, enshrined in the Constitution, while others argue that gun control measures save lives and do not infringe citizen rights.
For this discussion:
As with the abortion rights discussion, this is where you may engage each other or unitarily express your thoughts and opinions on what needs to be done about the contradictive scenarios that play out when we weigh rights to bear arms with rights to life. Should certain weapons be banned? Should certain people be banned from owning weapons? What will any of this do to prevent or at least reduce instances of gun violence? Do you think that there is even an issue? Do you have an alternative approach to protecting against mass shootings? Answer any, all, or just your questions.
