Imagine living in a world where the government controls all aspects of your life – your freedom, your rights, your opportunities. Ruling through a central power, this government acts in its own self-interest and limits the political freedoms of the people over whom it rules.

Living in the western part of the world under democratic governments this may seem like a fictional dystopian type of world. But, unfortunately, this is the reality for millions of people who live under a social compact dictated by an aristocratic state (Cerutti, 2017, p 17). This essay argues that the social compact is dictated by the state because the state is responsible for regulating the aspects of society that make up the social contract.

Drawing examples from modern aristocratic governments, these include security and welfare, the legal framework of a society and the economy. This essay is divided into four sections. First, it will define the social compact and aristocracy. The next three sections will provide examples of how aristocratic governments have and continue to dictate the social compact when it comes to arguably the most important sectors of society: security and welfare, legal frameworks, and the economy.
