Description
LO1
Discuss the production of pricing and tendering documents and determine how measurement is carried out in accordance with a standard method of measurement and apply industry principles and conventions to building measurement.
LO2
Apply industry standard principles, measurement methods, rules and conventions to various scenarios, demonstrating accuracy, critical thinking and the ability to integrate theory and practice.
NOTE on the use of a Standard Method of Measurement for Task 1:
For Task 1, you will need a copy of a standard method of measurement (SMM) to complete this assignment.
UK-based students are expected to use NRM2 – Detailed Measurement for Building Works (RICS 2012).
Students based overseas can choose to use either NRM2 or the latest edition of their local SMM. Students opting to use an SMM other than NRM2 must obtain approval from UCEM using the pro forma available in the assignment week.
Note that, if you are using a standard method other than NRM2, you need to:
• state this at the beginning of your answers to all measurement/taking-off questions
• submit copies of the relevant sections of the SMM that you have used with your assignment. This is important, otherwise, an assumption will be made by the tutor marking that NRM2 has been
used.
No marks will be awarded for Task 1 if measurement software is used. Task 2 (approximate word count: 600 words)
In the form of an essay, discuss the importance of the use of a Standard Method of Measurement (SMM) in assisting the quantity surveyor in the traditional measurement process and in the preparation of a Bill of Quantities.
You are encouraged to refer to the measurements carried out in Task 1 and use examples of relevant documentation.
You must state the total number of words used at the end of Task 2.
Reference list
You should include a reference list with a minimum of three separate relevant and appropriate sources that you have written about and cited within your work.
A bibliography of uncited sources is not required.
