This assignment is designed to provide opportunity to apply course information to a case study that has been compiled from current experiences of content teachers working with ELs in U.S. public schools. The case studies will be released during week 12 to ensure that sufficient course material has been covered that will benefit you as you write your paper.
After carefully choosing and reading a case study, address the following questions in your paper:
What are the outside issues facing this student?
What factors are affecting this student’s acquisition of English?
What additional information would you like to know about this student?
With whom would you collaborate to gather more information about this student?
What would you do in your role as a teacher or administrator to support this student?
What additional help do you need?
What do you need to learn so that you can help this student?
What do you already know that can help this student?
After choosing a vignette, you will analyze and provide recommendations for how the teacher in the case study can meet the challenges discussed in the case study (e.g., what recommendations will you provide to the teacher given what we have studied this semester).
Analysis:
For the analysis portion, you should identify issues directly related to the chosen topic. Every issue discussed should be exemplified with information from the case study. Explicit information should be provided for what is taking place in the case study (i.e. why is it happening?). Additionally, all of the issues should be presented with evidence from the course materials that highlight why this issue may exist and/or why the issue is important to the education of ELs and/or the chosen topic. [In other words, what is happening, why is it happening, why is it important, and what do the course materials say about it?]
The analysis should be well supported and elaborated on through evidence from multiple course readings through direct quotes; direct quotes must be relevant and contribute in a meaningful way to the analysis. (In the past sometimes students have thrown in quotes to meet this criteria yet the quotes did not add to the analysis.) Please note that meeting the minimum guidelines does not ensure that the paper is of sufficient quality to earn the grade of ‘A’. Each issue selected for discussion should be properly supported.
Recommendations:
The recommendations presented should directly relate to both the chosen topic and the specific issues discussed in the paper. Also, each recommendation should be constructive and presented with strong evidence from the course materials. Vague recommendations and/or recommendations presented without evidence will result in a loss of credit.
