Instructions to Students:
The consultancy firm you are employed by have recently been commissioned by the Northumbria
University (NU) Executive (none of whom are built environment professionals), to provide a report on
the future management of their built environment.
Background
Following a major review of the NU estate, a program has been formulated for acquisition of new
buildings and disposal of surplus ones, along with a funding commitment of £250m for estate
improvements to support the university’s 2025 vision and aspirations. The intention is to provide a fit
for purpose financially sustainable estate to reflect future demands and needs of the student and
higher education.
To date the approach towards managing and the day-to-day running of the universities built
environment has been ad-hoc, utilising both in-house and outsourced specialist personnel and
services. This has resulted in numerous internal and external contracts along with various service
level agreements that are not currently managed strategically. There is a concern moving forward that
this approach is expensive, inefficient and some areas of legal/regulatory compliancy requirements
are being overlooked.
You are to provide a written report that clearly outlines the options available to the executive to
manage the estate in a strategic managed way.
A clear proposal for the Executive is to be included within your conclusion.
The report should be 4000 words in length (see below for further details on word length).
Students must not contact anyone from the NU Campus Services Team
