Your criminal justice executive-level leader (chief of police, judge, warden, or similar) has asked you to write a monthly column for the local newspaper that informs citizens and stakeholders (including the legislature) about a recent major event.

For example, a high-speed chase, the death of a homeless person reported on the news, a community police project that started an after-school basketball program to bring teens and police together. The article should be informative, yet enjoyable to read and easy to understand.

Tables, charts, fun graphics, or important pictures might be beneficial. Information should be broad except when discussing specific situations—such as a death in the jail—that might concern citizens. Monthly department expenditures might be important and perhaps any unusual expenses. Citizens should be aware of anything that “went wrong” and the strategies for improving. Write your article with realistic imaginative data that simulates real life.

• If you are not currently working in criminal justice, write your article from the perspective of what you, as a citizen, would like to know from a criminal justice agency near you (police, courts or community corrections, prison).
