This week we are finishing the final two chapters of the book by Peterson and Krivo. The authors contend that one of the key explanations for racial and ethnic inequality in neighborhood crime is that minority neighborhoods tend to be surrounded by other high crime neighborhoods. In contrast, even the poorest white neighborhoods tend to be surrounded by areas that are not as high in crime.
For this discussion question, offer at least one reason why minority neighborhoods tend to be surrounded by areas that are higher in crime, and explain why being surrounded by higher rates of crime may be likely to elevate crime rates in a given neighborhood.
