Choose and defend one particular argument in a three-sided historiographical debate. Drawing on both primary (the National Covenant) and secondary sources (attached), you will take a side in this debate and argue that one of the following groups (local elites, religious elites, or the Scottish state) played the most important role in driving witch-hunting, specifically in the 1630s and 40s.

You should not be using ANY outside sources for this assignment. The attached sources resources should provide you with all the information you need to do well on this assignment. Again, you are crafting a persuasive essay here and trying to convince your audience that your argument is best, so you’ll need good evidence and examples from the readings to support your argument.

The minimum number of required sources for this assignment are (attached the sources and the textbook):

Primary Source: The National Covenant
Secondary source: reading 2 by Julian Goodare (Unit 3)
Secondary Source: reading 3 by Stuart Macdonald (Unit 3)
Secondary Source: Chapter 6 in your textbook (Brian Levack).

Additional Sources also allowed/encouraged:

Chapters 1, 2, and 4 in your textbook (Brian Levak)

All 4 of the minimum required sources should be used and cited in both the bibliography and footnotes. Skipping any of these will dramatically weaken your argument and make it difficult to effectively address the counter-arguments to your position.
