Lesson 14 Discussion: Human Factors Successes and Failures

Examine your environment at work and online this week. All around us are examples of tools, technology, or environments that could be designed better and/or designed well. See note below about perusing the discussion before you begin to try to use a unique example. When ready, create your original post by answering the following questions (as always, number your responses):
Take a photo (or screen shot in the case of a computer program or website) of a human factors failure (i.e., a tool, workspace, or device that could be better designed). Insert the photo into your post or attach it like a document.
Briefly describe what your fellow students (and instructor) are looking at and how it could/should be improved.
(Note: To take a screen shot (i.e., image of whatever appears on your computer screen), click the Prnt Scrn button (typically located above the function keys). Open a program like Paint, a common accessory application, and click the menu item or button to paste the image into the program. Then save the image as a jpg file.)
Using tips and guidelines from the textbook chapter and lesson, explain how the tool, device, workspace, program or website fails ergonomically.

Note: If you wish, you can answer all of the above questions and paste photos into one Word document and attach that to your discussion board post rather than answering the questions within the discussion board and attaching only the photos.
The title of your original post should provide a clue to your fellow students.
For example, if I was posting something about how my desk chair was not ergonically created in parts 1 and 2 then also discussed a better example for parts 3 and 4, the title of my post might be Bad and Better Office Chairs. Skim through the posts in the discussion board before you begin and try to use unique examples.
Remember if you paste your work into the text box, remember to take care to check formatting.
Then, discuss these ideas with your fellow students by reading their responses and answering the following questions. Remember, you are asked to have at least 3 replies and spread this across the week to encourage back-and-forth discussion.
Provide a different or additional recommendation to your fellow student’s human factors failure (i.e., his or her answer to part 2 above) based (a) mostly importantly on what you learned this week and (b) also your experience. Note: you may have to be creative here.
Do you think their human factors success (answers to parts 3 & 4 above) could be further improved based on (a) what you learned this week or (b) your experience?
Add anything else to the discussion you would like that was not addressed above.
