Purpose of this assignment:
The purpose of this assignment is for students to demonstrate an understanding of critical appraisal of a qualitative research study that correlates with their PICO question addressed in EBP paper #1. This paper is a demonstration of the culmination of your writing skills, APA formatting, and understanding of research. This assignment is worth 45 points.
Guidelines for paper:
Write a paper focusing on a qualitative study that addresses your PICO(T) question and that was addressed in your first paper. This paper should be no longer than 3 pages in length. This does not include the title page, references, or table.
Do not use quotes unless absolutely necessary (eg. presentation of specific themes/findings). Points will be deducted for improper use of quotes.
Use Times New Roman size 12 font for this paper
You will be citing a lot throughout this paper—ALL citations should be scholarly sources. Remember scholarly sources include your textbook, peer-reviewed journals, government sources (eg. CDC, WHO), nationally and regionally recognized associations (eg. American Nurses Association).
Not scholarly: blogs, informational websites (even university websites), websites with no author. If you are unsure whether your source is scholarly or not, post your question to the course discussion board.
If you cite your textbook, be sure to cite and reference the author of the chapter, not the textbook in general. See APA manual for how to cite and reference a chapter in an edited book.
The first page of your paper is the title page.
An author’s note, running head, and abstract are not required for this paper.

The next page starts the body of the paper. Use level 1 headings for each section of the paper after the introduction. Use appropriate APA formatting of the page including the headers and citations (note that you do not need an “Introduction” heading per APA). What was the study’s design? Describe the study design and cite.
Describe more details about design in the table including whether the design was inferred by you or stated by the authors.
If authors do not state design (eg. just “qualitative study”) you must infer what type of qualitative design it is and justify it.
Discuss two strengths to this type of design. Provide rationale and citation
Describe the sample used in this study. Describe recruitment strategy for this study. Provide more in depth detail such as demographics and/or setting in the table.
What type of sampling methodology was used? (Hint: see textbook for details) Provide rationale and citation.
Discuss the role(s) of the researcher in the study. Provide more in depth detail in the table.
Describe the data collection method in the body of the paper. Provide more in-depth detail in the table.
Results of Evidence
What were the main findings of this study? Discuss main findings/themes that are relevant to the PICO(T) question in the body of the paper. This should include the name of at least one theme/category from the results section of the article.
Provide complete description of findings (eg. themes/categories) in the table.
Discuss how the findings provide context for your PICO(T) question. How did these results help inform your PICO(T) question? How are the findings helpful if a nurse wanted to implement the selected nursing intervention? Or are they not helpful?
Provide rationale for this discussion
Describe the data analysis process in the body of the paper.
Include details about data analysis in the table.
Trustworthiness of Evidence
Discuss how the researchers addressed two elements of trustworthiness in the body of the paper (choose two: credibility, transferability, dependability, and confirmability). Trustworthiness may be discussed specifically by the authors, but you should also deduce what enhanced or threatened trustworthiness from what you have read about the study.
If nothing was done to enhance a specific element, describe a specific way the authors could have enhanced that element of trustworthiness.
Provide rationale for your discussion of these two elements and cite in the body of your paper.
Include discussion of how the researchers addressed all elements of trustworthiness in the table (credibility, transferability, dependability, and confirmability). Again, regardless of whether the authors outwardly discussed trustworthiness, deduce how these elements were enhanced or threatened. If nothing was done to enhance a specific element, describe a specific way the authors could have enhanced that element of trustworthiness.

At the end of your paper include a table of your critical appraisal (see instruction regarding the table with an example provided in a separate document). Use the template provided in the assignment link. Do not use direct quotes in your table unless these relate to information that cannot be paraphrased (eg. Aims, specific themes). Any directly quoted information should be cited appropriately with the page number.
As a separate file:
Submit a pdf file of the qualitative study you referred to in your paper with your EBP 3 paper. The entire article must be submitted. Name this file with “QUAL” as well as the first author and year published: “QUAL_Author Year” (eg. QUAL_Jones 2019).
The “end” of this section may seem abrupt (as if a conclusion of sorts is needed) but it’s OK.
You do not need to summarize or write a conclusion here.
