Provide several strategic or operational planning recommendations based on the results of the scan.

The strategic and or operational planning recommendations I have come up with for the external scans in my part 1 post consist of the following:

For Amarillo College of Texas, online enrollments are expected to sky rocket (Distance Education Internal Scan and External Scan, 2009). At the same time, many higher learning institutions are attempting to increase their geographical reach (Distance Education Internal Scan and External Scan, 2009). According to Amarillo College’s external scan, it was determined that colleges being able offering at least an associate degree online was a critical strategy to long term growth (Distance Education Internal Scan and External Scan, 2009).

My recommendations for Amarillo College are to develop a committee that specifically deals with oversight of their online courses and degree programs. They should do an analysis of competitors in online education and figure out what strategies are best working for them regarding web design, course materials and delivery of those materials. Another recommendation I have is hiring more individuals who are tech savvy as well as information technology professionals to ensure the school has qualified personnel to handle all areas of online instruction.

For Rancho Santiago Community College the external scan shows that the college bound population is declining (An Environmental Scan of Ranch Santiago Community College District, 2019). Housing costs are also rising (An Environmental Scan of Ranch Santiago Community College District, 2019). Wages in the area are rising and the jobs that are in demand are nursing, computer support specialists and carpenters.

Some recommendations I have are looking into acquiring land to possibly build on campus housing for students to combat rising housing costs. The college will also need to be sure to offer degrees in nursing and information technology as well as certifications in certified nursing assistants and carpentry.

The results of your external scan should indicate how the institution can better provide at least 2:

For Amarillo College, their strategy based on their external scan should include job fairs that will focus on qualifications as well as diversity within the work environment at Amarillo College (local cultural events). Amarillo College should offer a reduced tuition rate for students who live in the state of Texas. This is better than just the county or local region because it will allow the school to expand (campus and community collaboration program). Another strategy is hiring graduates from their technology related degree programs who have achieved good grades (Vocational and job-related programs).

This will allow Amarillo College to hire qualified individuals who have experience with the school and can offer valuable input into any possible changes the college may need to make.
For Rancho Santiago Community College, their strategy should consist of having a committee in charge of acquiring nearby land at a low price that will allow the college to build dorms/ housing for students at an affordable cost (Expanding real estate opportunities for the main campus).

This will also bring in extra income for the school. With this income, they should give pay raises to senior staff who they cannot afford to lose in order to provide competitive pay to combat higher wages elsewhere (Increased funding or different sources of funding). Another strategy is to offer the degree programs for jobs that are in high demand in that particular area as well as a discount for local residents to attend those programs (Innovative programs that meet the needs of the community)
