In a brief value essay, develop and defend your point of view on the following issue:
CCC is planning a weeklong festival celebrating the diversity of its students, featuring showcases devoted to different ethnic, religious, even regional cultures that help make up the CCC student population. Chester’s Most Righteous (CMR), a controversial religious group known for their hardline views and provocative tactics, has asked for permission to be part of the festival.
Some CCC students are members, and they feel they have a right to be heard like any other group. Other student organizations object, however, on the basis that allowing these extremists would create a very uncomfortable environment for other festival attendees, and could send the message the college condones their views. What should the college do?
Assume for the purposes of the essay that if they are permitted to attend, the CMR will be very loud and highly visible but also law-abiding, and that there will be sufficient security to prevent actual violence or unrest.
Instead, base your position only on whether or not you believe this group should be included on a philosophical or ethical level, and explain why.
Note: CMR is not a real organization, but a hypothetical one created for this argument.
