Pairing education and technology can be of great benefit for the student’s in the classroom. Using technology in the classroom can range from low tech to high tech devices depending on the students’ needs. Some low tech devices can be weighted pencils, pencil grips, and oral sensory toys. On the other hand, some high tech devices can be educational programs, interactive whiteboards, or communication devices. Furthermore, teachers also benefit from using technology in the classroom. Math-related technology can be a calculator or an online math learning platform. Educational math platforms come with many benefits for the learner.
These benefits include getting step by step examples of the problems they are having difficulty with. In addition, they let the learner see their progress and this can work as a motivator for the student (Kukey, Gunes, & Genà 2019). Moreover, the educator can see the student’s strengths and weaknesses. There are many benefits to be gained through the use of technology in math class. Therefore, it would be ideal for teachers to learn and understand how technology can make an impact for the better if incorporated correctly in their lessons.

Having a smart board/projector/laptops for students is the best resource that technology has. There are so many helpful resources on the internet to help support math. On the computer you can find calculators, make the text larger, use text to speech, and find many manipulatives. To help locate and validate the resources, it is best to work together with your co-workers. Allow them to share what they have used that works and share tips and tricks with each other. There is a saying that goes, “work smarter, not harder.” There is not much time in each school day, meeting with coworkers to brainstorm and share ideas can be helpful, time saving, and provide you with many resources for all academics. “When educators work together, they form important professional and personal relationships. Teachers often draw support from each another and can delegate tasks that allow each teacher to feel effective. Collaboration between teachers contributes to school improvement and student success” (Arkansas State University, 2020).

Topic 6 DQ 2
Research suggests that computer-based mathematics programs, in addition to direct teacher instruction, lead to higher success rates for students in their math classes. What are your thoughts about the use of computer-based math programs and how they should be incorporated into the classroom to support teaching?

Given a reliable and valid mathematics’ program, I think it is a great resource in the classroom. Most of these resources test students and then begin online lessons and activities based on their current skill set, meeting the students’ where they are at. In my school, we use ST Math. This is a great resource that tests students upon entry and then teaches skills based on activities with no directions, it is all exploration. The students really love this challenge and enjoy watching the resource mascot, Jiji the penguin, move across the screen when they are successful.
Resources like this should not be the only instruction the students get, though it can really help practice the skills and reinforce the instruction (Top Hat, 2021). In my classroom, I have students that range from grades k-5, so online resources such as this are extremely helpful. Throughout the week, we meet in small groups with like skill level students and on the opposite days, we practice with online, hands on, or paper materials. There are so many resources out there to bind with the in person teaching.
Outside of this, using technology allows students to continue their practice and learning at home or anywhere with internet and builds their technology skill set that is, at this point, an expectation in today’s life (Top Hat, 2021).
