In order to promote comprehension, different reading strategies must be implemented. Before, during and after reading activities allow students to see, learn and engage in different comprehension strategies. Each time a student is engaging in activities, it allows them to use a different way to comprehend what they are reading. Pre-reading activities can pique their interest in what they are going to read. This is the time to employ a student’s background knowledge to make predictions about the test. Students can be encouraged to establish a purpose for the reading, which will increase their engagement.

During reading activities, remind students to use the strategies and monitor for understanding. Students can focus their attention on specific parts of the reading and return to the predictions they made to see if they were right. After reading activities gives students the chance to discuss what they read. The teacher can ask the students to recall important events or information from the text or sequence the story.

Students should be given a variety of opportunities to respond to questions including writing, dramatic play, music, reader’s theater, videos, debate, or drawing pictures. All of these allow students to have a better chance of comprehending what they read. Teachers should implement comprehension strategies during all these times to enhance the chances of comprehension for all students (Strategies that Promote Comprehension, 2021).

Reading strategies are set in place to aid the learner in developing their reading skills. Therefore, before reading, during reading, and after reading learning activities are vital for the student. Before reading activities, establish a purpose for reading (Singh 2019). Furthermore, it will activate a student’s prior knowledge on the topic. This will promote further engagement for the reader.

During reading strategies, help the student remain engaged throughout the text. In addition, these strategies can help the student increase their comprehension of the text. To implement this, the educator can take some time to ask their student’s question regarding the text. This can deepen the reader’s comprehension of the text they are reading (ReadNatrually 2021). After reading learning activities are created to make further connections for the student’s comprehension of the text (ReadNatrually 2021).

For example, the teacher can assign a quiz after the reading. This quiz will help the educator see the text comprehension level of each student. However, the teacher can make it a True/False quiz. In doing so, the student’s will not feel stressed about taking the quiz. They must simply pay attention throughout their reading. Another strategy can be to make a graphic organizer to visually see the development of the text. This strategy can deepen comprehension of the text for the student. Reading strategies are imperative for all readers. Implementing reading strategies at a young age can prove to be beneficial for the child’s future.

Students growing up in today’s world will need to use advanced reading and writing skills in jobs, in their household, and all aspect of their personal lives. In all classes, students will need to read, write and discuss topics. Literacy skills are vital in all content areas because students will need to complete lessons, answer questions, present projects, and work in groups using reading and writing skills. Students should be reading and writing in every class they attend, every day. When a student is reading and writing they are using their brains in different ways than speaking. Students should be answering questions using writing skills whenever possible.

Tests and quizzes involve writing but not all writing needs to be formal. Students can jot down notes; do one-minute writing prompts or graffiti conversations. At any level, teachers should model how to write appropriately with correct structure and dynamics. Young children can use paper to jot down or represent their ideas even though they cannot formally write using words and sentences after reading a text. Any practice writing is great at this age. In elementary school, students may do quick writes to see what structures they use after they read a text to answer a question. High school students can do writing that is more formal and reading for tests, quizzes and essays. These strategies can be done in any content area to encourage reading and writing for the age of the students in the classroom (Alber, 2020).
