Book Review Instructions:
Select one monograph (single author book of original History writing) and complete a book review using
the directions below.
1.
All reviews must be typed neatly, proofread and spell checked. Use standard
one-inch margins, double-spaced and no larger than a 12 point font.
2.
The average length of the review using the above standard is 3 -5 pages.
3.
Put your name, the date and the college at the top of the page. You do not need a title page. Please do not use one.
4.
At the top of the text (instead of a title) give a bibliographic citation for the book. This includes the Author, Complete Title, Edition, Place of Publication, Publisher, Date of Publication and Page Length. For example:
John Putnam Demos, The Unredeemed Captive: A Family Story From Early America. New York: Vintage Books, 1994. 316pp.
**Note that the titles of books are always underlined and that the second line of a bibliographic entry is indented half an inch. The bibliographic entry is not double-spaced.
5.
Do not give a simple blow-by-blow summary of the book. The objective is to describe the author’s main arguments. The review should begin with a basic description of the book: What is the subject? What is the book about?
6.
Next try to find the author’s thesis (main point). This may require several sentences in the case of books with complicated arguments. This may be found in the Introduction or the Conclusion sections of books but not always. Sometimes you have to dig for it
.
7.
Next explain how the author attempts to prove his argument and what sources does he/she rely on. Read the bibliography and footnotes to find out.
8.
At this point, you should use 2 to 3 pages to summarize the book, paying attention to how the information in the book tries to prove the author’s main point.
9.
To finish the review, give your evaluation of the book. Who was it written for? How did it enhance your knowledge of a subject? Would it make a useful learning tool for a class? Why? Always explain why!
