This module will address the following programme level outcomes
Demonstrate knowledge of, and analyse, theories, practice and research related to learning and development.
Debate ethical dilemmas raised in practical contexts and develop a clear understanding of the relationship between your own value systems and professional codes
of practice, standards and, where applicable, legislation.
Utilise systematic reflection to consider your learning and professional development, as well as your developing understanding of the wider professional context
This assessment is a portfolio made up of 5 key sections, altogether this should be equivalent to 5000 words (+/- 10%).
Further support and discussions will take place in all sessions.
This is a guide or a starting point, begin to write all over this and personalise to your own ideas and needs.
1. Introduction – 400 words
This section provides an overview of the whole portfolio. The introduction should explain to the reader what they are going to read about, and the key ideas being discussed.
2. A letter to my future self – 500 words
This section is a letter written to your future self about your hopes, fears and offers as your start your foundation degree.
You may wish to include reasons why you choose to join the FD, why you work within your chosen sector/ age group, and/or your family influences.
Your hopes are what you wish for; your fears are what may worry you; your offers are the skills you bring to the group and things you can help each other with (Personally. Professionally or academically).
For this section you can write in whatever style you feel is comfortable to you. Do, however, write in Standard English, use paragraphs and full stops, and check your
spelling, punctuation and grammar.
3. Reflecting on your professional role – 1000 words
This section introduces your current role working with children, young people,families or communities. Be generic, rather than specific names of settings.
Explain the key parts to your role and begin to consider what readings suggest about your professional role or area of work.
This section will then utilise systematic reflection to consider your learning and professional development, begin to use Harvard referencing and some of the discussed in taught sessions.
Analyse these readings and consider where the strengths and limitations may be in the practical application of theoretical ideas.
4. Analysing my values and ethics – 1000 words
This section asks you to consider your values, ethics and understandings about what childhood is. You may focus on a specific age group within childhood that relates to
your working role if you prefer.
Consider what recent theories suggest about childhood and question what priorities are driving your own values and ethics within your personal, professional and academic work with children and young people.
5. Professional development Plan – 1000 words
This section builds upon the previous sections and summarises into an action plan your own learning and development over the next few years.
This section should include some SMART targets and discuss the strengths and limitations of creating an action plan for personal, professional and academic development.
Reflect upon your developing understanding of the wider professional context in which you currently work and offer some ideas about where you would like to work in the future, and why.
6. Conclusion – 400 words
Similar to the introduction, this should review the key ideas discussed within this portfolio and ‘tell the reader what they have read.’ Include key references to support your ideas as you summarize the previous sections.
Offer a summary regarding your current position and what you think/ feel about reflective practice. Summarise what guides your values and ethics and consider your position as principled professional.
Reference List – 500 words
Any piece of academic writing should include a reference list.
