Research and TED Talk

Instructions

Conduct research to write a literature review to develop a novel idea related to self-leadership and present it in the format of a TED-Style Talk. A TED-Style talk is a short, concise, engaging presentation designed to share new ideas and insights in an accessible way to a global audience.  The idea should be:

Novel – The student’s idea can be inspired by direct offerings of this course and/or through cross-pollinating various concepts in relation to experiences from personal or professional situations (a surprising or counterintuitive insight about behavior at work and offering a novel solution to prevent or manage it, an idea that goes against the grain of conventional wisdom, questioning a fad, etc.).

The student should be greatly invested and possess a high personal interest in the topic. The attractiveness of the idea will partially depend upon the degree to which the majority of the audience could relate to and benefit from it.

Interesting to a broad audience – The idea should link to common challenges within the workplace that prevent individuals from achieving personal and professional effectiveness (i.e., self-leadership obstacles and problems).

Some examples of the common categories include reacting to as opposed to preventing adverse interactions or events; taking a negative, destructive stance toward work; focusing on distasteful aspects of the job; anticipating experiences and outcomes to be unpleasant; creating a negative psychological world through thoughts and behaviors; working in a disorganized, haphazard manner; etc..

Informed by research – The research component of this assignment will involve a review of relevant literature from which the student will extract themes and patterns to form their idea.

Following the literature review, the student will include a detailed description of the idea and how it emerged from their research and previous knowledge/experiences.

Actionable – The idea should have practical implications for leaders across the business sector.  The audience should have a clear idea of what to consider doing differently, and why.

Technical Requirements:

Presentation Video – The TED-style Talk video should include

(1) a story or scenario that sheds light upon the roots and primary dimensions of the idea in a tangible manner,

(2) key research findings including concepts that this course does not cover, and

(3) a call to action to highlight the practical implications of the student’s idea.

The video should be 7-10 minutes in total and will be evaluated on the rigor of the evidence, the originality, attractiveness, and applicability of the idea, the relevance of the story, the practicality of the recommendation related to self-leadership, and the impact of the overall delivery in terms of the emotions and thoughts the student evokes among their audience.

Literature Review – The literature review will be 6-10 pages (excluding cover page and reference page); APA writing conventions should be followed with a minimum of eight (8) sources referenced and cited.
