Similarities and differences between the epistemology of the two models
Compare and contrast two identified family theories by answering how these theories differ or are similar in terms of the following:
Human nature and family relations
• How do the theories understand human nature and the human condition? How do the theories view families?
• How well do these theories address issues of race, ethnicity, spirituality, gender and social class? How would theorists representing non-dominant culture voices (feminist, LGBTQIA, Afro-centric, etc.) assess these theories (be specific and provide examples)? If selected models do not specifically address these concerns, how do you imagine representatives of these viewpoints would critique the models?
• How da these models understand how problems develop in relationships and within individuals?
• What role da relationships play in health functioning?
Nature of change
• How well do these theories facilitate hope and a positive expectation for change (e.g. a healing ritual, a spiritual framework, the orientation must be credible and persuasive from the client’s frame of reference, etc.)?

How does a therapist working from these orientations join with person(s)? To what degree is joining emphasized?
How important is it to develop therapeutic relationships? How do these models conceptualize key elements making up therapeutic relationships?
Assessment:
What is focus of assessment? emphasis on action? Affect? Meaning?) How is process assessed? What kind of questions would be helpful to the therapist in assessing spirituality, cultural and gender issues? Be specific
Systemic diagnosis:
Compare and contrast how information differs or is similar when making a systemic diagnosis. List the primary terms of each theory. How does this theory relate to DSM diagnosis or other models for diagnosing mental and behavioral health conditions?
The therapist What is the role/position of the therapist in these theories? How is the role of the therapist (e.g., self-disclosing, active, directive, neutral, etc.) similar or different? Discussion about how these theories are systemic o How are these theories systemic?
Look at notes about General System Theory and cybernetics. Review what systemic means in C.ehares textbook. This involves circular hypothesizing and going beyond the individual to understand the problem and the solutions.
