In recent years the relationship between local police and their communities have fallen into a state of disrepair.

Perceptions of aggressive policing, misconduct, inappropriate use of force, race and class based discrimination, and an unwillingness to change has eroded levels of trust and confidence in the police among citizens. Distrust and perceptions of inappropriate actions by the police have sparked riots in small cities (i.e. Ferguson) and large urban centers (i.e. Baltimore).

In response to troubled relations between police and the communities they serve, the Obama Administration established the President’s Task Force on 21st Century Policing in 2015.

Similarly, the Trump Adminitration established the President’s Commission on Law Enforcement and the Administration of Justice in 2020.

Also included witthin each chaoter are specific recommendations to improve law enforcement and the administration of justice in the United States.
