Assignment Brief and Guidance
Scenario:
You have been employed as a junior design engineer for a small manufacturing company, Office Furniture Designers Limerick (OFDL). The company specialises in office furniture. You are required to assist in some engineering design work, that will involve the design of a simple Bookcase which is part of the office/industrial canteen furniture range.
The design will be part of the company’s “home office” range and it is hoped that is will increase future sales. It must be durable and will be advertised as “a contemporary solution for the home office incorporating both comfort and design”.
The figures below are an indication of the type of product available, but the entire design is up to you, however you must take into consideration the customer requirements.

Safe and comfortable
Washable (soap and warm water)
Visually appealing
Weight: light weight
Material: two types
Manufacturing cost competitive
Assignment 2: Formulating possible technical solutions
Note: Assignment 2 addresses the following Learning Outcomes: P4, P5, M3 and D2.
Having completed your design specification, you have been asked to present a suggested design solution, based upon your design specification from Part 1.
Your presentation should include an evaluation of at least three different solutions and justify the case for your proposed final choice.
To complete this part, the following elements should also be undertaken:
Explore Cause and Effect diagrams, Forced Decision making and the Pugh Matrix.
Use one of the above as part of the design process
Use software to model/simulate/prototype one solution, based on annotated sketches/CAD models/drawings. Work
may be supplemented by carefully prepared hand drawings.
Evaluate 3 solutions, presenting a case for the final choice of solution
