Assignment Details
Levels of automation have existed for over 40 years and are receiving attention currently in developments of self-driving vehicles, physical/mechanical and cognitive/information levels in manufacturing, petroleum systems, and others.
An associated domain is in autonomous operations. As automation levels shift during an operational phase, human operators can be included or excluded depending on their limitations. Many problem areas have been identified with autonomous system operations, including mode confusion, operator lack of understanding actions taken through autonomous system actions, and so on.
Take a position on whether autonomous system operations should be restrained and always under human control (to some extent), or, whether at times and in select circumstances the system operations should conform to the range of automation levels possible.
Provide an example in an industry or operational setting of your choosing to illustrate your main points.
Provide at least one scholarly source to support your position.
