Practicing legal skills in the context of strength-based practice
Assignment : Practicing Legal Skills in the Context of Strength-based Practice
Length: 7 – 10 pages
1. Child Welfare Report – (20%) – See template sample Appendix 2 (4-5 pages, single-spaced).
The goal of this assignment is to integrate what you have learned in previous units, learning activities, from colleagues and classmates and your own experiences.
The report should be very concise (4 to 5 pages) and the facts and information should be clear and written objectively. It should follow the systematic analytical framework as outlined through the questions in this assignment and include references to the application of the current child welfare policies and SDM tools. Headings for the report are in the template provided.
Use the following checklist:
Names of the children who are the subject of the investigation and ongoing protection case.
Legal status of the child (clarify under the CFCSA the appropriate references to the child’s legal status).
Names of all caregivers (key players) and their relationship to the children.
Purpose, description and reason of the investigation and ongoing case involvement (cite appropriate pieces of the CFCSA and links to policy).
Relevant legislation from the Child Family Community Services Act.
Relevant Child and Youth Safety and Family Support Policies that apply to this specific case.
Reference to relevant Structured Decision-Making Tools (SDM).
Summary of your family’s information and situation.
Recommendations (goals) for the parents to address the child protection concerns.
Objectivity – facts are clearly stated from a strength, response and evidence-based approach; clinical opinion is identified as such.
Your report is objective, balanced and considers alternative explanations or hypotheses.
The report identifies client strengths and resources that are available to assist them with any concerns that are raised (reference appropriate community services).
The evidence and information documented in the report supports the overall findings and recommendations.
2. Analytical Paper – (20%) 4-5 pages, APA style
Upon completion of the report, write an analysis of your experience from a critical and selfreflective perspective.
Consider the following questions and be specific in your critique:
Discuss the various power relations, from the micro to the macro level, that exist in a child protection investigation and within ongoing protective services.
How did you challenge and/or support inequitable power relations? How did you play out inequitable power relations? What would you do differently? What would you do the same?
What are the cultural and racial implications and considerations throughout the child protection continuum of this case?
Explore the ethical, moral, political, and personal dilemmas and any contradictions that you encountered while writing this report. Critically reflect upon how your location impacts your perceptions of practice.
Explore the parts of this assignment that “fit” for you personally and within CYC practice and explain thoroughly.
Identify response based, strength based and evidence-based practice principles, concepts, rationale and models that you would apply in child protection interventions.
Integrate class learnings, discussions and learning outcomes from the course where appropriate.
for a deferral must be submitted no later than the end of the term following the session in which the deferral is granted OR the date is assigned by the Course Instructor. There will be no exceptions made to this policy.
