You can choose one of the following topics for this assignment.
1. Investigate the representation, manifestation, maintenance, and/or challenges to one of the following categories of ideologies:
– ideologies about native speaker English in non-native English-speaking contexts
– ideologies about standard English in non-native English-speaking contexts
– ideologies about linguistic authenticity in non-native English-speaking contexts
– Ideologies about language change/variation in a context of your interest – e.g. a conversational context, a media discourse context, or a community context.
2. Investigate how people understand the interrelations between language and power in a context of your interest – e.g. a conversational context, a media discourse context, or a community context, from a perspective of language ideologies.
3. Investigate the interrelations between education and language ideologies in a context of your interest – e.g. a conversational context, an educational context, or a community context.
You can discuss what you think of the interrelations between education and language ideologies by examining educational discourses and language practice in education.
You can examine others’ views of the interrelations between education and language perceptions through interviews, focus groups, observations, or emails.
