Students will write a 4 to 5 page paper (not including the title and reference page) addressing a specific topic related to nursing microbial control and patient care. Items that must be addressed in the paper will include:

Type of infectious agent

Reservoir and transmission

Portal of entry and exit

Risk factors for the patient and nurse/dental hygienist

Period(s) when patient is infectious

Signs and symptoms of disease

Physical and/or chemical control recommended for patient

Physical and/or chemical control recommended for items that have come into contact with patient or patient specimens

Safety precautions recommended for nurse/dental hygienist including use of PPE

Discussion of whether isolation of the patient is recommended

Discussion of possible patient outcomes of the disease
