Assignment: Conversation Essay

For this assignment you will imagine yourself in a conversation with author Ta-Nehisi Coates regarding his novel Between the World and Me. Within this conversation, you will identify three or more passages from the text that you specifically would like to dialogue with Coates regarding. Your dialogue will be both questions (to the author) and commentary (about the text).

Word Count:

You will write a 1200 – 1500 word conversation essay.

Citations:

You must cite at least three or more passages in your essay in order to give your paper credibility. There are two types of citation that you will need to have in your paper: in-text citation (parenthetical citation) and Works Cited citations. You must use direct quotes from Between the World and Me—not indirect quotes.

Works Cited:

Your conversation essay must include a Works Cited page. Your Works Cited page will include the primary text—Ta-Nehisi Coates’ Between the World and Me and any additional source you use to construct your essay. All of your sources must be cited on the Works Cited page.

Content:

You should assume that your audience is already familiar with the primary text—Between the World and Me. Therefore, your conversation essay will not be a summary of Coates’ novel.

Note that any conversation that simply falls back on summarizing Coates’ novel will receive a failing grade.

Overview:

Your conversation essay will take on the form of a letter. As such, after you have established the standard required heading, you format your paper with a salutation (see example below).
