Discuss it in the context of the qualities and characteristics of New Media art. Your essay should build on your knowledge of New Media expressed in the Week 2 discussion assignment.

Essay must include a discussion of specific New Media qualities and/or characteristics, as well as an interpretation of your selection based on what you read and observe about the work.

Aim for about 4 thoughtful paragraphs (500 words or so total).

Cite any additional sources if you do consult them (MLA style is preferred).500 words.

Include any images you discuss in your paper. Practice labeling your images with artist, title, date, medium.

Note that titles of artworks should always be italicized.

Paragraph 1 (about 100 words)

1. Introduce the work of art with the artist’s name, title (in italics), date it was created (if known), and medium (what was used to create this work of art?). You can also include dimensions and where the work is located, if known, but this is optional.

2. Include a topic statement. Your thesis should provide a framework for your analysis and suggest your interpretation of the work and why it is a good representation of New Media. A thesis statement does not necessarily involve a statement of argument, but it should let the reader know how the artist’s formal choices affect the viewer’s understanding of the work’s content.

Example of a topic statement:

“In Überorgan (2000), Tim Hawkinson uses everyday materials, electronic components, sound, and movement to create an interactive experience that directly engages the viewer, challenging the work of art as a static, unchanging experience.”

3. Again, give the reader a sense of what you think the work of art is about, where you notice the artist engaging in New Media methods or materials, and what the effect of the use of New Media is on the viewer?

Paragraphs 2 & 3 (about 150 words each)

1. In paragraph 2, you should try to visually describe your example and point to the specific qualities of New Media you see used (for example, does the artwork demonstrate a good use of interactivity or replicability?).

Aim for a discussion of at least 2 New Media characteristics or qualities.

2. When describing your artwork, you can discuss its color, shape, size, use of sound and/or movement, etc. If this is your first visual arts course, don’t worry, just describe the object as best you can! You might pretend you’re telling someone about the artwork who can’t see it.

3. Paragraph 3 should address your interpretation of the artwork; this is what you think the work of art is about. You might also write about how the viewer might approach or experience the artwork. Be sure to back up any interpretation with direct observation of the art object.

Concluding Paragraph (about 100 words)

1. Your conclusion should briefly summarize your findings and relate back to the topic statement you presented in your introduction;

however, you should avoid simply repeating what you’ve already stated. You should include any new ideas, insights, or understandings you gained about the work through the analysis process.

2. For example, consider how your example affected your understanding of New Media. Does it give you a new appreciation of how artists can use unconventional materials in their works? Does it engage the viewer in a new or unexpected way? Does it provide social commentary, or suggest a break with conventional approaches to art and/or art-making?
