Occupational blood-born pathogen exposure (OBE) is an injury sustained by a healthcare worker exposed to blood and body fluid exposure, needle stick, or sharp instrument injury. OBE is best managed with preventing exposure, emergency procedures after OBE, proper reporting, and post-exposure treatment. OBE is most common in the operating room at Wicks General Hospital. Through a hospital needs assessment, you determined that the Quality of Life for operating room staff has been adversely effected by the physical and psychological implications of OBE.
You are tasked with developing a Health Education program and have partnership agreements with Wick General Hospital to conduct trainings. An review of incident reports found that 80% of operating room nurses had OBE experiences in the past year with younger nurses reporting OBE more often; possibly due to lack of experience and insufficient practice of preventive measures. Additional risk factors identified included duration of surgical procedure and currently available protective equipment. Only 33% of nurses directly reported the incident to hospital infection control after an incident.
A review of the literature found that compared to experienced nurses, new nurses had lower:
