Assignment Instructions: Academic Integrity reading and memo
Think: What resonates with you from integrity in previous classes? What do you think will be particularly applicable in a reporting public affairs class? What jumps out at you and makes you think?
Write: Write a 2- to 3-page essay, double-spaced, including three of the most important take-away points from the handbook that you should remember in 313. Discuss each point, articulating your thinking. (A full, double-spaced page is about 250 words.)
Note: The handbook is a publication of the School of Journalism, not for the overall UA campus, so be sure to be clear on that in your essay, instead of referring it to simply as the University of Arizona’s policy. The handbook adheres to UA policies, but then the School of Journalism takes them farther in the journalism setting.
Possible angles: What was the culture for cheating or academic honesty in your earlier education? What do you know about integrity issues for journalism? What do you think are the most important areas of professional integrity and academic integrity? Are they different for journalism? How do the integrity rules in the School of Journalism relate to what you are seeing in the news media today? Did anything surprise you in the handbook?
You don’t have to answer all of those questions. But think. And write from your thinking instead of just regurgitating. One way to tackle the assignment is to write about one point or a couple of points in depth. Or choose five take-sway points and develop those for a couple of paragraphs each. No lists and fragments. You can write this as a memo or an essay
