GIVE FEEDBACK ON STUDENT DISCUSSION WHY /WHY NOT YOU AGREE USE UP TO DATE REFERENCES. THANKS.
Happiness in the workplace is a difficult objective to achieve and some of the reasons are implied in the quote above. It’s tough enough for us humans to sustain happiness outside of work, how can it be considered to be a reasonable expectation when you are doing something that is often not the first choice of activity for anyone?
I think managers and business leaders can benefit from promoting engagement leading by example by staying positive, giving consistent feedback and recognition to staff. In short, I think it just may be enough to not be a source of unhappiness. According to Warr, despite the added burdens associated with self employment, those who work for themselves are generally more content. (Warr, 2018) This relates to autonomy and therefore, if it is leveraged into a business employment relationship, it can be beneficial.
Another facet of happiness has to do with overall health and wellness. Having a program that invests in employee physical and mental health have been proven to not only have major implications for tenure and retention but even for the bottom line. (Gray, et al., 2019) Strip away any health or stress related issues from an employee and workplace happiness is easier to achieve. Employee assistance programs can serve as a catalyst for health promotion throughout the organization.
But I think it’s important to remember Wilde’s quote. We all at times are defined by both side of that quote. We all bring with us to work a suitcase full of real-life concerns every day. It makes us human and we aren’t always going to want to be cheered up. Having the emotional intelligence to know how to treat people in different circumstances is of greater advantage than a blanket approach to creating a fun atmosphere. (Bolton & Houlihan, 2009)
