Studies have shown that many African-Americans distrust medical and public health authorities in the United States. This distrust is one of many factors that supposedly affect levels of African-
American participation in clinical research trials, HIV/AIDS testing and prevention, and needle exchange programs. Racism has been implicated in medical decision-making, with inequities reported in treatment for heart disease and pain management, among other things.
