Activity 1: Research question: What is the effect when prescribed cognitive behavioral therapy for generalized anxiety disorder in the elderly population?
Episodes of anxiety can happen within all age groups. This topic is of particular importance as it pertains to treating a generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) in the elderly. Many elderly patients are automatically prescribed benzodiazepines and their cognition is affected. Picton, Marino and Nealy (2018) describe the risk in prescribing these drugs particularly in patients 65 years or older and may promote dementia. The World Health Organization (WHO) state that over 20% of adults aged 60 and over suffer from a mental or neurological disorder. Life stressors such as impaired mobility, illnesses, chronic pain, living alone, and seclusion can have a significant impact on their mental health resulting in anxiety and at many times leading to depression.
Referring patients to qualified mental health professionals to assess and treat the elderly population may help prevent or reduce chronic diseases. Early diagnosis will promote the best opportunities to assist in mental health. Many research studies for the purpose of this paper promote psychotherapy versus medications. Harvard Health describes key points as it relates to Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) as the first-line treatment for GAD in the elderly.
The Cochrane review stated that overall, 46% of elderly patients with anxiety experienced symptom relief compared to 14% of controls.
