How have the political systems of Central and Eastern Europe developed post-communism?
A focus on democratic development and analysis of one subtopic or multiple subtopics. looking at party development (prevalence of fragmented polarised political systems and unstable oversized coalitions), weak civil society (legacy of civil society suppression under communism), industrial relations (weak due to rejection of socialist model), and/or the civil service (low administrative capacity low, centrally controlled, and corruption).
Then support this with empirical examples from the literature pointing to key factors affecting adaption. choosing two countries or contrasting the Balkan states (history of the Ottoman Empire) with Central European states. The journals West European Politics and the Journal of European Public Policy are useful.
