Using the resources you have acquired about your ancestor, create a snapshot of their life and submit it as a short story. Use one primary source and 1-3 secondary sources to support the narrative. Your short story should be at least 250 words (1 page), use Chicago style citations, and include the following:
1. Identify and correctly cite primary and secondary sources using Chicago Style.
2. Introduce your ancestor (name, dates of birth and death, significant life events, relationship to you) and describe the experience or events depicted in your sources.
3. Evaluate your primary and secondary sources using SOURCE:
Sourcing Heuristic:
Origin: (author/creator, date, provenance, process, artisanal or industrial)
Use: (investigate intention and purpose of creation)
Reality Check: (bias and limitations of information, including credibility)
Context: (related historical events, people, and places)
Evidence: (explain how this relates to your argument)
4. Explain how 1-3 secondary sources support your understanding of the events depicted in your primary source. Include context about how the people or events depicted in your primary source were conforming to or defying expectations of that time period.
5. Answer all of these questions in your narrative description:
• Why is the event or person depicted in your primary artifact significant to our understanding of your ancestor?
• What aspect of your ancestor’s history is highlighted by this artifact?
• What significant cultural and historical events occurred during your ancestor’s lifetime? during the creation of your primary artifact?
• How and why did cultural and historical events related to the time period influence the creator and creation of your artifact?
• How do the secondary sources you cited help you understand the primary artifact?
