Your assignment this week is to write a 500-word essay on a current or emerging issue regarding the First Amendment in the criminal justice profession.
It may be a good idea to use issues discussed in the various documents included this week, but it is not required. Keep this as an academic essay, and personal anecdotes should be minimal, if used at all. Write the essay from an academic perspective. Use academic language; avoid the use of contractions. Describe the issue.
Discuss critically why the problem exists, the current state of the law, and any areas that may be necessary for social or legal reform.
Finally, include in your discussion what the criminal justice agency or personnel can do to minimize occasions of violating an individual’s First Amendment rights and avoid or minimize law suits. Be sure to cite and reference statutes and cases according to APA and Bluebook style.
