Find a real world example where a semantic and/or pragmatic phenomenon (or phenomena) plays an important role. Your task is to write a 1500 word report describing the issue involved in the case and situating it in the linguistic context (what linguistic phenomenon or phenomena is involved?). When discussing the linguistic phenomenon/phenomena involved, you may find that you have enough material based on the readings that we did over the course of the semester; if the semantic/pragmatic phenomenon was not one that we looked at in the module then it is likely that you will need to do further reading.
In either case, you are of course welcome to contact me for reading recommendations. Your report should show that:(a) you are able to apply concepts from semantics/pragmatics in order to identify and discuss an example where meaning matters in the real world;
(b) you understand the linguistic phenomenon or phenomena at work;
(c) you can explain what role the phenomenon plays in the real world example;
(d) you are able to reflect in an original way on the role of meaning in the real world that is brought to light by your chosen example.
Marking criteria
Your work will be assessed on the basis of the following:
•Originality, appropriateness and relevance of the chosen example to the topic of meaning in the real world [3 points]
•Clear and accurate description of the real world example [4 points]
•Clear and accurate description of the linguistic phenomenon/phenomena involved [4 points]•Appropriate use and citation of relevant sources [1 point]
•Your own, original reflection on the issues discussed [4 points]
•Organization and structure of the report, and clarity of written expression [4 points
