Civility

Platform 5 within the NMC Standards of proficiency (NMC 2018) identifies many statements in relation to your understanding of leadership and team working and your ability to exhibit leadership potential. This is through your understanding of group culture and dynamics; working effectively in teams, utilising the contributions of others; supporting, motivating, providing constructive feedback; and engaging in team reflection.

For this we are asking you to think about the type of person and type of leader you want to be.

There is some reading for you to complete and two TED talks to view. The links to these items are available in the Leadership folder on NILE. This preparatory work should take you no more than 3 hours in total.

Following this you should work in groups (these will be allocated) to complete the following group task.

The aim of this activity is to help you explore the concept of civility as a leadership trait through a team task that will facilitate personal and group reflection

In our classroom session (2.5 hours) each group should present the following (up to 15 minutes per group):

1) Showcase your poster/slide and support this with rationale (e.g. why did you select the information you did; what messages are you hoping to convey; what impact are you hoping for; who would be your target audience) 5 mins

2) Identify your learning from this activity. All members of the group should have discussed this (e.g. what have you learned about civility and your role as a leader. How might you change because of your understanding of civility) 5 mins

3) Summarise the learning from one of the academic articles that you accessed about civility. This could be one that was identified for you or one that you have accessed. 3 mins
