Written Assignments:
All writing assignments, including both major papers and shorter writing assignments, should be typed and formatted according to MLA style. MLA guidelines specify that papers should be typed in 12-point font, doubled-spaced, and with one-inch margins on all sides. Quotations should be identified at the end of the sentence through the use of a parenthetical including the author’s last name and the page number corresponding to the quote, e.g., (Smith 100).
Your paper should also include a works cited page that lists the full bibliographical details for each text quoted in the paper. Research Paper (50 points): The largest single component of your grade will consist of a 12-20pp. final research paper. This essay should develop a unique argument about one or more of the texts studied in the class, and it should engage with at least four secondary sources.
(These secondary sources can be taken from the optional readings and the annotated bibliographies we will produce as a class [see below], or you may find sources on your own. If you choose to locate alternative sources, though, you should make sure that they are peer-reviewed.)
Final Paper Proposal + Literature Review (10 points): The final paper proposal + literature review is another activity designed to help you with your final research project.
For this assignment, you will be asked to submit a 3-5pp paper that lays out your project and its main idea, as well as summarizes the scholarly work that has been done on this subject.
Ideally, these pages will form the first two sections of your research paper. As such, the assignment is intended to get you started on your final project, as well as to provide you with some initial feedback on your writing.
