Dental aesthetics is a subjective aspect of restorative practice. It is essential that a dental technician has a strong understanding of underlying principles governing facial and dental aesthetics when working with the dental team on complex patient cases.

When designing a complex dental restoration in order to produce the best aesthetic outcome for a patient, it is crucial that consideration is given to the principles of dental aesthetics and replication of natural tissues.
Critically analyse the aesthetic principles and theories which suggest how the oral cavity and craniofacial configuration has an effect on dental and facial aesthetics, and determine whether these are still valid in modern practice.
Evaluate the various systems which are used to record and replicate oro-facial tissues in dental technology. Apply these systems to dental disciplines/cases/practice to demonstrate synthesis of knowledge.
Demonstrate an understanding of how new techniques have changed the roles of the dental team in relation to aesthetics and application of aesthetic principles, such as technologies used in shade taking and digital aesthetic design.
Suggest how these developments may impact the management of complex patient cases.
Ensure you utilise of a range of qualitative and quantitative research evidence to support your discussion. Also use a range of appropriate images to illustrate your writing. Draw your discussion to a close with clear conclusion and rational recommendations.
