Research method Qualitative report

Report –

Analysis of Online Video Diary/Testimonial Data

Your task:

For this assignment you will be analysing data that you have transcribed from one of four sets of online videos from YouTube.

Your group can choose which one of the four data sets they would like to use depending on the group’s interests are.

However, your group cannot use any other data set and once they have decided upon which data set, they will use then they cannot change their decision.

The task for this assessment is to analyse your group’s chosen data set using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) and write the results up in the form of a qualitative research report. Although the selection of the data set and transcription of the data is done as a group, the analysis of the data and the report will be written as an individual piece of work.

– Choose one of four data sets to work with;

– Transcribe your group’s chosen data set; – Share the transcripts among the group so that each group member has a copy of all the data. Then working individually…

– Analyse all of the transcripts from your group’s data set; – Write your report based on your analysis of the data (see below for more details on what this should include);

Choice of data sets: At the end of the first lecture of the qualitative sequence the lecture tutor will make available a document on the module learning on the NOW which will contain descriptions of the four data sets and links to one sample clip of each data topic. As an individual you will be asked to view each of the sample clips and decide for yourself which data set interests you the most.

In your first workshop (beginning the week after the first lecture) your workshop tutor will organise students into groups of four according to student preferences for the four topics. Transcription of video data sets: Whichever data set your group chooses the data sources that make up each set have been divided into four fairly equal chunks. Each member of your group will be required to transcribe one of those four chunks of the data. Ideally, groups should comprise of four students.

However, if there is a group of more than or less than four students, the workshop tutor will discuss with the group how the transcription is to be allocated because we want each member of the group to practice the transferrable skill of transcribing. The links to all four full data sets appear further on in this document. Once each group member has transcribed their chunk of the data, they must share that document with the rest of the group so that all students have a copy of all the transcripts.

This means that each member of the group will have a full set of good quality transcripts to conduct some analysis on. Therefore, all transcripts need to be produced on a word processor on a computer so that the data can easily be shared with other members of the group. Transcription of data will be supported in the workshop sessions

Report: Once you have access to all the data (i.e., all of the transcripts in your chosen data set) you must code and analyse the data INDIVIDUALLY. It is fine to discuss possible themes that are emerging with your group members but the analysis you produce (along with everything else) in your report must be your own work.

The report should contain the following sections:

Title (not included in word limit) The title will depend on the topic chosen and should indicate something about the findings from your analysis. It should also contain some reference to the qualitative method being employed, in this case ‘Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis’. Abstract You do not need to write an abstract for this report.

Introduction & Research Question (approximately 800 words) Your report will include an introduction which should aim to set a context for the research to be carried out.

The introduction should:

• Be well organized and structured;

• Clearly introduce of topic and identify the niche in the literature to be addressed by the research;

• Formulate a line of argument as to why the study should be done;

• Use appropriate and contemporary psychological literature to support your argument(s);

• Critically evaluate previous research mentioned in the report;

• Conclude with an appropriately focused, explicitly stated qualitative research question that addresses identified niche in the literature.

How to write qualitative report introduction and the development of an appropriate research question will be covered in the workshops.

Method (approximately 500 words) As this is the first time you have written a qualitative report, we suggest using 4 sub-sections.

Design:

You should describe what IPA is and why it is suitable for this kind work. You will find topics discussed in the early lectures in the module helpful in writing this section.

Data Sources:

You should write about your group’s chosen data set consists of and how it was acquired. As you did not personally collect the data, we will provide you with information in Lecture 7 for you to complete this part of the report.

Analytical Procedure: You should describe the steps you took to analyse the data. As the methodology you are using is IPA there are several very good sources that will give you information to help you with this. The lecture series accompanying the workshops will be invaluable in giving you this information.

Ethical considerations:

You should include something about the ethics of carrying out online research using a qualitative approach. Again, information about these kinds of ethical considerations will be given out the lecture series accompanying the workshops.

Analysis/discussion (approximately 1,000 words)

This is the main section of the report. Here you will produce a combined analysis and discussion section where you present your master table of themes (i.e., all the themes from your analysis) and analysis of the data in a coherent narrative. From the master table of themes, you should provide a detailed analysis of ONE theme of your choice.

You should justify your choice of theme to present and discuss. You must support your analysis with relevant extracts from at least 3 but no more than 5 different transcripts of your group’s chosen data set. At the end of the theme, you should consider the importance and implications of your findings and relate these to relevant theory. Conclusion (approximately 200 words) In this section you should aim to draw out overall conclusions considering your findings.

Qualitative research by the nature of how it is carried out will typically yield at least some novel results. Therefore, remember to think about what has been your contribution to the area of interest you have been researching–not just its relation to previous research, but where is the novelty of your findings?

Reference list (not included in word limit) You must cite all the references you have used for this report using an appropriate and consistent referencing style. You must include references to any empirical or methodological IPA literature and possibly other related theory or research that you have used.

Appendices There are NO appendices required for this report so please do not include any. Data Sets There are 4 data sets that you and your group can choose from. These are listed in detail below. Once your group has settled on a data set to analyse, they must not change their decision. Here are the hyperlinks to the data sets, which are all available online
