Select a contemporary newspaper or magazine article on a current civil rights issue.
Your review should be 250–300 words long and consist of two parts:
Describe the event and explain why it is a civil rights issue (use our discussions on rights and civil rights to explain). Be sure to say who you think is right and why.
Quote the article and explain the importance of the quoted language.
After you analyze the article, add a short paragraph in which you discuss the reliability of the publisher (the newspaper or magazine or journal or website). Does it give a particular slant, that you can tell? Can you identify reasons to trust it? Or not to?
Do most of the articles that surround the one you chose appear to be factual? In other words, this part of your journal should be about the publication, not the article itself. For example, if the article you chose was published in The New York Times, this part of your review should be about The New York Times.
This part of the assignment will help you learn to evaluate the reliability of particular publications and other sources.
