Paper TWO analyzing a scholarly article
INSTRUCTIONS
1) find a scholarly article (review video on how to do) that is a STUDY (NOT an opinion article) about your chosen theory.
2) Read the article using the handout, “Best way to read a scholarly article”
a. might want to FIRST read the questions you are to answer (see below) to know what to look for
3) Write a paper that answers the following questions:
QUESTIONS to answer:
a) What were the authors’ primary purpose for doing this study?
-you will find some ideas for this in the following places:
literature review (sometimes there is a “rationale” section)
the hypotheses (which are predictions) will help
the conclusion or discussion
b) What arguments/claims do the authors’ present to support their purpose?
-you will find some ideas for this in the following places:
Literature review leading up to the hypotheses
Early part of the discussion section
c) Choose TWO different paragraphs in the LITERATURE REVIEW and describe the following:
1) how EACH contributes to the primary purpose of the study
a) first paragraph’s contribution
b) second paragraph’s contribution
2) how TOGETHER the paragraphs “lead the reader” to understanding the hypotheses
d) What conclusions do the authors’ draw about the study?

Results (but, truthfully you can bypass this and go to:)
Discussion/conclusion
WRITING LOGISITCS
1) use a page heading with: your name, section #, & theory
2) Use each question as a BOLDED HEADING in your paper
3) WITHIN each question, use structural clarity (no run-on paragraphs)
-just because you are answering a single question does NOT mean that there are not separate paragraphs
-in fact, there SHOULD be separate paragraphs
-You can get help with this in the module “writing well”
Submit using ONLY: WORD or PDF
Google docs will NOT be accepted (you can save a Google doc as a WORD file)
You are to submit 2 files (there will be SEPARATE ASSIGNMENTS for each one):
1) your summary paper following these instructions (Turnitin plagiarism detector WILL be turned on for this one)
2) the ARTICLE that you used for this summary assignment (Turnitin will not be turned on for this one)
