Topic 2.1 – The purpose of this assessment is to use your growing understanding of determinants of health and illness, risk factors for chronicdisease, along with changing patterns and trends in contemporary society, to comment on the statement below. Read your peers’ responses and discuss.
Do you consider that epidemiological data support Hitchcock’s (2015) statement?
Hitchcock (2015) argues that the emphasis on ‘unsustainable’ health costs for the elderly is sometimes an ideologically driven interpretation of health data – the high costs are associated with dying and death and generally, people die when they are older. “So, by some estimates, an ageing population may not break the bank until they start to die in increasing numbers” (p.29).
She goes on to say:
…if we truly wish to address the cost of health care (or the cost of ill health), we should be urgently addressing the poor health of the younger generations. The real tsunami is not one of age per se, but of a population of increasingly poor, obese, diabetic, sedentary young and middle-aged who are the multi-morbid patients of the future and who will require many drugs, doctors, operations (joint replacements, bariatric surgery,amputations, coronary vessel interventions) and hospitalisations (Hitchcock, 2015, p.30)
