By understanding the business model of its biggest rival, Intel, AMD has improved its strategy execution. Furthermore, by Implementing functional strategy types, such as Differentiation and Growth strategies, AMD can capitalize on its capabilities (Smartbiz, 2021).

Using a SWOT analysis AMD identified, not only their own; Strength, Weakness, Opportunities and Threats but gathered data on their rivals to enhance their market share (Amason, 2011, 52). In addition using a framework such RBV, to combine internal and external comparable, could have helped explain where AMD were less profitable in the marketplace (Collis, 2008).

AMD obtained incremental business by fulfilling orders Intel failed to do so, supporting its Growth strategy (Amason, 2011,141). To optimize growth the Differentiation strategy was implemented. AMD offered a broader and more accessible range of products than Intel, as a result AMD grew its marketshare 10% year on year (Amason, 2011,141).

Similarly the Portmeirion Group, with over 700 years of intellectual property, has also implemented a Growth and Differentiation strategy (Portmeirion Group, 2021). Acquisition strategy has enabled the Group to gain market share by reducing the competition, by bringing them in-house  (Smartbiz, 2021). Portmeirion plan to integrate with third party systems to grow their online platform providing a growth opportunity for companies such as AMD (Portmeirion Group, 2021).
