Problem Based Learning Assessment

Description

Problem Situation

Dr. Jacquline Oyster wants to be a great leader.  She believes she should lead the caring community and be role model for that type of leadership.  She believes she should inspire teachers, help them grow, encourage them to be their best with praise and celebration.  She wants to create a culture that will foster character development. While she is trying, she does not feel confident.

She genuinely cares about her faculty, but they seem to be in constant conflict.  She has two or three teachers who are very negative and create problems for many others on staff.

They are experienced teachers who are vocal, critical, and take aim at other teachers — especially those who want to try anything new.  They seem to keep some portion of the faculty upset most of the time!  While they are not well-liked by the students, they do not seem to give students a hard time — in the way they do teachers.

Dr. Oyster recently visited a national school of character and loved the environment – such a caring place – with high expectations for all.  As a result of the visit, she examined the “11 Principles Framework” and was intrigued by it. She has read The Leadership Challenge by Kouzes and Posner and wants to be the type of leader they describe.

She does not know where to start. She has considered reviewing mission, vision, and values – but fears these teachers would just make noise.  She wants to do the right thing to help them become a caring community.  She tries to model the way and be a caring leader — but is more likely to avoid them to eliminate the criticism they usually share.  She wants to create a positive environment and foster character development in her school.  She wonders if she has what it takes to lead.
