Assignment – Ink & Fountain solution

In this assignment you will learn about offset ink manufacturing and the importance of fountain solution.
Ink (Part 1)
In the first portion of this assignment you will watch the video:” How ink is made” on YouTube
Show in a flowchart the steps that are necessary to manufacture an ink. Describe also the quality control tests that were carried out in the video and what is their purpose.
In the second portion of this assignment you will learn about the functions of fountain solution in the offset lithographic process. You will learn about the components in fountain solution and also how to test a fountain solution.
For this assignment you will be provided with data on pH and conductivity, two important properties of fountain solution, during the addition of fountain solution concentrate to water.
Rub resistance (Part 3)
In the third part of this assignment you will learn about the rub resistance of offset lithographic inks. You will also learn how the substrate has an influence as well. The rub resistance is also influenced by ink components like waxes and hard drying vegetable oils.
For this assignment you will watch a video on how to test for rub resistance. You will need to research on how the rub resistance of an offset ink can be controlled. Find out in what instance(s) an offset ink should have no wax in their formulation in them.
